The label ‘Grown in Ethiopia’ is not yet common on supermarket shelves across the world, but one day it may be. That, at least, is the goal of GreenPath Food, an Ethiopian horticulture start-up founded in 2015 by former staff of the government’s Agricultural Transformation Agency.

GreenPath, a 3-year-old for-profit startup, has developed a network of more than 150 smallholder farmers in Butajira, Ethiopia, who use organic, permaculture methods to grow herbs and other crops like avocados and chile peppers. They’ve been exporting the goods throughout Africa and Europe, and the herbs for Rakkasan will be the first time they have shipped to the United States.

Working together, the alliance partners will develop a business model and financing options that allow smallholders to purchase solar irrigation pumps, as well as an after-sale support model to ensure that the equipment continues to work properly. The model will be initially piloted among approximately 100 GreenPath Food smallholder suppliers in Butajira, in southwestern Ethiopia.
